The purpose of this page is to provide information on the projects TWI accomplished during 2002.    Projects completed in 2002 have been placed on the Completed Project page. Please click on subjects of interest to learn more about the project.

"Days in the Park" for Disabled Children

During the last quarter of 2002, four "Days-in-the Park" were held in locations out of Sarajevo for  children with disabilities and their families. In September 2002, the group went to a lake about 30 miles from Sarajevo for swimming and a BBQ. In October, the group held a Halloween party in Sarajevo and in November, the group went to the Ski slopes above Sarajevo for a pot-lunch party. In December, the group had a holiday get-together where gifts were exchanged and a party was held. The results coming from these get-togethers has been amazing. These children are being introduced into society and their families are able to socialize and assist one another. These "days-out" have been wonderfully attended and enjoyed by all.

Camp for  Children with Special Needs and their Families:

In July 2002, children with Special Needs from Sarajevo and their family were treated to a two-day camp and retreat at the "House of Peace" in the beautiful mountains of central Bosnia. The children and their families were transported by bus from Sarajevo to Rama where they were accommodated in a wonderful monastery situated on a lake high in the mountains. The nuns at the monastery prepared delicious food and the group participated in camp activities that included games, swimming, song, stories, walks and crafts. They even enjoyed an evening bon-fire. Where just a few years ago it was thought that these children could not do these types of activities, now we know that the children with special needs also can enjoy the same things as typical children. "Coping with Trauma" Training Workshop:

A two-day "Coping With Trauma Training Workshop" was held at the "House of Peace" in Rama, central Bosnia. More than 40 teachers, caregivers, directors, and educators from orphanages, universities, schools and organizations throughout Bosnia and Montenegro, attended the workshop and participated in group sessions on how to identify and treat war-trauma in children and others.

Camps to Children in Bosnia

During the summer of 2002, camps were taken to schools and orphanages throughout Bosnia and in Montenegro. Two separate camp teams worked with more than 1000 children at 15 schools and orphanages providing stories, games, crafts, songs, dance and an opportunity to have some of the fun and love they have missed because of 5-years of war. All facets of this project were targeted toward teaching love, reconciliation and forgiveness. Team #1 brought a well known musician who provided a wonderful addition to the camp program. Lunches were provided and gifts, caps, sports equipment and crafts were left behind at each camp location to remind the children and their families that Americans are thinking of them.
