Workshop Summary

In April 2005, Bonnie Miller returned to Bosnia for her semi-annual series of training workshops for over 300 educators.  These three full-day seminars for teachers and pedagogues (school counselors) covered the regions of Sarajevo , Ilidza and Tuzla canton.  In addition to general information about active and interactive methods for teaching all students, the seminars concentrated on the needs of children with learning disabilities and attention problems and how to identify and help them in the regular classroom.  The importance of parent-teacher communication and teamwork was also emphasized.

The seminars were presented using power points and videos in the local language and were illustrated by providing a variety of examples.  Participants held small group and large group discussions, brainstorming, role playing, exercises in which they experienced how it feels to have a learning disability, and a Question and Answer session.  Immediate feedback from all three of the seminars was extremely positive.  Educators enjoyed the interactive multimedia approach, which demonstrated the use of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic teaching styles.

Each participant was given a packet which included Bonnie Miller’s materials:

“Connecting with Children in the Classroom: Manual for Teachers”

“Communicating with Children: Manual for Parents”

“I Can Learn” guidebook about Learning Disabilities and Attention Deficit Disorder

and a packet of useful handouts on learning disabilities.

A representative from each school attending the seminars received the “I Can Learn” video.

To maximize the impact of the seminar, participants were encouraged to bring back the workshop information and all the materials to share with their colleagues at their participating schools (over 150 in Bosnia ).
